Choosing a school

Choosing a school can be hectic and stressful. Often, prospective students make poor decisions when selecting a school. Some base their choices on family influence or peer pressure, but the fact is, you are the one who will attend the school, not your parents or friends. It’s important to research a school you’re interested in thoroughly; visiting the campus is highly recommended. Checking out the faculty and departments is also necessary. When I was ready to further my education after the State Polytechnic in Nigeria, I visited four universities: FUTO, Uniport, MOUAU, and Uniuyo. I ultimately chose the latter. Several factors influenced my decision, including the school’s proximity to my state. I am not the type to stay away from family for long. Another reason was the opportunities the school and its location offered. The school is a federal institution, which means lower tuition costs. I also appreciate social resources such as the school’s radio station, sports facilities, and the overall serenity. Additionally, the school is diverse, welcoming students from across the country. In summary, to choose the school that best fits you, consider factors like location and environment, available resources (technological, academic, research, etc.), opportunities, social vibrancy, learning facilities, culture, and tuition costs. If you come from a middle- or low-income background, choosing a school closer to home can save on transportation costs. Some ‘don’ts’ when choosing a school include: 1. Don’t choose a school just because your friends are there—you’re likely to become just a number.
2. Don’t select a school based simply on sentimentality, such as it being in your state or city, or because your dad is the Vice Chancellor.
3. Don’t choose a school known for violence or educational inefficiency.
4. Don’t pick a school located in difficult terrain. Do you spend a day or more traveling to school? What risks do you face in such journeys? These and other considerations should guide your decision when choosing a school.
