The Home Chef

Which is the best restaurant in your city?

Okay, so this is a response to the blog prompt above.

The best restaurant in my city? I’d say it’s my kitchen. I’m not the best chef around, but I can cook something that will make you scratch your head and forget your name. 😋

Update: I’ve had several friends from different backgrounds (American, Ghanaian, Mexican, Indian, Cameroonian, etc.) over, and they all confirmed the quality of my cooking. This isn’t just for one dish; it’s for various dishes like jollof rice, stewed rice, okra soup, egusi, and moimoi.

  1. “My kitchen is my experimental laboratory” is a fair description of any home cook worth eating with. Okra and egusi next to eggs and noodles suggests the experiments range pretty widely too. Cooking that makes someone forget their own name is a high bar and a good one to aim at.

  2. That Nigerian okra and egusi look amazing — honestly, more tempting than a lot of restaurant dishes I’ve seen. There’s something really special about being able to call your own kitchen “the best restaurant in the city”; it says you genuinely trust your own cooking, and that’s not something everyone can say. I’m definitely taking that egusi as inspiration for my next meal.

    • Thank you so much. I have tried several egusi and okra dishes at different restaurants here in Los Angeles, but they don’t taste like what I grew up eating in Nigeria. I decided to make my own, and it turned out to be much better—more affordable, healthier, and richer.
