If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?

If I could instantly learn any skill, it wouldn’t be speaking another language, writing a bestseller, or mastering an instrument. While those skills are valuable, I believe the skill I would choose is the ability to listen truly—to listen deeply, compassionately, and without judgment. We live in a world where many are speaking, but not enough are being truly heard.
This Men’s Mental Health Month, I think about the countless men carrying invisible burdens. Many have been taught from childhood that strength means silence, that emotions must be hidden, and that vulnerability is something to avoid. They learn how to provide, protect, and persevere, but sometimes forget that they, too, deserve care.
If I could master the skill of deep listening, I would use it to remind people—especially men—that their stories matter. That their struggles are not signs of weakness. That they don’t have to carry every burden alone.
Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give someone isn’t advice or solutions but the simple reassurance: I see you. I hear you. You matter.
Men’s mental health matters. Men’s lives matter. Learning to listen is learning to see the humanity in others. It’s understanding that behind every person is a story, a struggle, a dream, and a desire to be understood.
Perhaps the most important skill we can all develop is the ability to make others feel seen—not because of what they achieve but because of who they are.
To the good men out there, you matter, yes, you do. And I celebrate you!
