Thoughts on Africa 3: Education

Research is a careful inquiry or examination to seek or revise facts, principles, theories, applications, etc.; a persistent search for truth. Interestingly, the definition ends with the search for truth. Besides broadening human thinking, research aims to discover the reasons and reasons not. The study offers solid recommendations and suggestions that can help solve problems. Education aims to improve lives. An educated person thinks critically and ‘out of the box.’Although we have educated Africans, research in supposedly ‘Sub-Saharan’ African universities remains limited. One main goal of establishing universities is to improve our social, economic, health, and political lives, which can be achieved through research.

Many universities in Europe, North America, and Asia create new knowledge through research. Some talented researchers in these universities are from Africa. So, my question is, why do we not foster research in African universities?

Why do African universities fall behind in research? I will try to list some reasons and may explain them in future posts.

1. Lack of motivation.

2. Lack of research materials and equipment.

3. No funding, since research needs significant resources.

4. Even when proper research is done, recommendations are often not implemented.

I may write more on this in my next Thought on African Education.

How is everyone? Remember our motto: Be good, be kind.

Good morning from West Africa!
