Thank You, New Mexico!

Thank You, New Mexico!

In Igbo culture, there’s a saying: ekele onye akịdị, ọ gwọta ọzọ, which translates to “If you thank the one who cooks beans, they will be happy to cook more.” But, I’m not talking about beans.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude as I reflect on my recent experiences. The end of 2024 was challenging; I had to leave California for New Mexico to pursue teaching opportunities. Moving to a new state was mentally and physically straining. Long story short, I was fortunate enough to lead Folklore classes at the University of New Mexico, and despite being new to the position, I truly enjoyed my work at the institution.

Some highlights of my time in New Mexico included witnessing the beautiful sunrises and sunsets in Rio Rancho and Albuquerque, experiencing the ancient charm of Santa Fe, and taking in the breathtaking view of Mount Sandia. I also had some amusing encounters with the Greater Roadrunners, which I like to think of as the mini dinosaurs of our time!

I spent many productive hours at the Zimmermans’ Library, which became my favorite spot. The breakfast burritos at Wecks, the buffets at the Indian and Chinese restaurants, and the spicy dishes at the Mexican restaurants made my stay even more enjoyable. Additionally, the wonderful people I met along the way enriched my experience. I just wish there were Nigerian or African food outlets in Albuquerque!

Life in New Mexico moves more slowly than in California, but I greatly appreciate this state. I will always be a proud supporter and resident of the Land of Enchantment! Thank you, New Mexico, for welcoming me and allowing me to pursue my teaching career. Go, Lobos! I’m leaving for LA, but I’ll be back, I assure you!

To conclude this reflection, I would like to share a brief poetic thought. Excuse me, but I’m too lazy today to express it in lines and rhymes!

New Mexico – my New Mexico

I will miss the sight of Sandia Mountain, especially its surrounding ephemeral clouds on early mornings. Each time I sit on the bus and look through the window, I admire God’s masterpiece—the mountain, sunrise alongside the clouds. I can’t help but notice that this mountain, this citadel, seems to follow me wherever I go. I often wonder why that is. My thoughts about Sandia are deeply intertwined with my feelings about New Mexico and its people. Whenever New Mexico comes to mind, I first picture the resilient, fortified, majestic Sandia Mountains. I am grateful for the time I have spent and the connections I have made here.

You will rise, Sandia, every sunrise and sunset, and just like the state of New Mexico—yes, you will, forever!
